No Incarnation Without the Virgin Birth? A Proposal for Discussion

Abstract

In the Creed, Christ’s Incarnation is linked to his birth from the Virgin Mary. What is the connection between these two articles of faith? This article develops a christological argument for the historicity of the virgin birth. Its central thesis runs as follows: the unique ordering of the human nature to the divine nature of Christ that is required for the constitution of the hypostatic union speaks in favor of understanding the biblical testimony to the virgin birth as a historical event.
